About this Lumbini & Janakpur trip
A gentle pilgrimage across Nepal's Terai plains to two birthplaces revered across India. In Janakpur, the ancient Mithila capital of King Janak, offer prayers at the white marble Janaki Mandir, see the Vivah Mandap where Lord Rama and Sita were married, and join the evening aarti at the holy sagars. Visit Dhanushadham, where a fragment of Shiva's bow is said to have fallen. Then fly via Kathmandu to Lumbini, the UNESCO-listed birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, for the Maya Devi Temple and its marker stone, the Ashoka Pillar of 249 BCE, the Puskarini pond and the international monasteries of the Sacred Garden. Kathmandu's Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath complete the circuit.
Janaki Mandir and Vivah Mandap in Janakpur, and Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, with Kathmandu darshan.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa?
No. Indian citizens visit Nepal without a visa using a valid passport or Voter ID card. Please carry the same ID you used to book domestic flights.
Can we do this trip by road from India?
Yes. Janakpur is close to the Jaynagar border in Bihar and Lumbini is about 25 km from the Sunauli border near Gorakhpur. We offer a road-only version starting from Gorakhpur or Darbhanga on request.
Is there anything special about Vivah Panchami?
Vivah Panchami celebrates the wedding of Ram and Sita, with a re-enactment and processions in Janakpur. Hotels sell out early, so book at least 3 months ahead for these dates.
Is Lumbini suitable for seniors?
Yes. The Sacred Garden is flat, and we use electric rickshaws between the monasteries, which are spread over a large area. Wheelchairs are available at the Maya Devi Temple.
What kind of food will we get?
Janakpur and Lumbini have simple vegetarian north-Indian and Mithila meals. We pre-arrange pure vegetarian menus and can arrange Jain food with notice.
