Frequently asked questions

What is the dress code at the Golden Temple?

Everyone must cover their head and remove footwear, and modest clothing is expected. Free head scarves are available at the entrance. Tobacco and alcohol are strictly prohibited.

Is the RFID yatra card mandatory for Vaishno Devi?

Yes. Every pilgrim needs an RFID card, which you collect at Katra with your photo ID. It must be shown at Banganga and is valid for a set time from issue.

Can seniors do the Vaishno Devi yatra?

Yes. Options include the helicopter from Katra to Sanjhichhat (then 2.5 km to Bhawan), battery cars from Ardhkuwari, ponies and palkis. Helicopter seats should be booked well in advance on the Shrine Board website.

When is the Wagah ceremony?

Daily before sunset — around 4:15 pm in winter and 5:15 pm in summer. Arrive an hour early, and carry only your phone and ID, as bags are not allowed.

Can we carry mobiles into the holy cave?

No. Phones, cameras, belts and leather goods must be deposited in free lockers at Bhawan before darshan.
