About this Amarnath Yatra via Baltal trip
The Amarnath cave sits at about 3,888 m in the Kashmir Himalaya, and each summer an ice lingam forms inside it, worshipped as Baba Barfani. The yatra runs for roughly six to eight weeks from early July to Raksha Bandhan and is managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), so registration, a compulsory health certificate and an RFID card are all mandatory. This five-day package uses the shorter Baltal route. You fly into Srinagar, drive past Sonmarg to Baltal base camp, then trek about 14 km to the cave (or ride a pony or palki, or take the helicopter to Panchtarni). You can return to Baltal the same day. Afterwards there's a recovery day in Srinagar with a shikara ride on Dal Lake. Food along the route comes from the free langars run by volunteer groups.

Frequently asked questions
Who can do the Amarnath Yatra?
The SASB allows pilgrims aged 13 to 70 who hold a valid Compulsory Health Certificate from an authorised doctor. Women more than six weeks pregnant are not permitted.
How do I register?
Registration opens in spring through designated bank branches or online on the SASB portal for a specific date and route. You need the CHC, photos and ID. We'll guide you step by step and collect your RFID card on arrival.
Baltal or Pahalgam — which route?
Baltal is short (about 14 km) but steep and can be done in a day. The traditional Pahalgam route goes via Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni, is about 32–36 km and takes 3–4 days, but the gradient is gentler and the scenery spectacular. We offer a Pahalgam departure on request.
Is there a helicopter option?
Yes. SASB-approved helicopters fly from Neelgrath (Baltal) to Panchtarni. The cave is then about 6 km away by foot or pony. Tickets are sold only through official channels and flights depend on the weather.
What about altitude sickness and weather?
The cave is at about 3,888 m. Rain, snow and sudden closures are common, and the yatra can be suspended at short notice. Walk slowly, keep drinking water and follow the instructions of officials and medical camps along the route.
