About this Kamakhya Shakti Peeth & Shillong trip
Kamakhya, on Nilachal hill above Guwahati, is one of the most revered of the 51 Shakti Peethas and the centre of Tantric worship in India. This five-day trip combines it with the hills of Meghalaya. In Guwahati you have darshan at Kamakhya (with a paid special-entry ticket to cut the queue), visit Bhuvaneshwari temple higher up the hill, take a ferry to Umananda, the Shiva temple on a river island in the Brahmaputra, and go on a sunset cruise. You then drive up to Shillong past Umiam Lake for Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak and Police Bazaar, and spend a day in Cherrapunji among the Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls and the Mawsmai caves. The trip ends with the drive back to Guwahati airport.
Kamakhya darshan, Umananda island temple, a Brahmaputra sunset cruise, then Shillong and Cherrapunji.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Kamakhya queue take?
General darshan can take 3–6 hours, and much longer on Tuesdays, Saturdays and during Navratri. The paid special-entry ticket from the temple trust usually cuts that to 1–2 hours.
When is the temple closed?
The temple closes for about three days during the Ambubachi Mela (usually around 22–26 June), when the goddess is believed to menstruate. It reopens to huge crowds. It also closes for a short period each afternoon.
What does the Kamakhya garbhagriha look like?
There's no idol. The goddess is worshipped as a yoni-shaped stone in a natural spring in an underground chamber. The steps down are narrow and slippery, so take care.
Does the Umananda ferry always run?
Ferries run during daylight hours but may be suspended in high water during the monsoon or in bad weather.
Can we do only Guwahati without Shillong?
Yes. A 2-night Guwahati-only package is available, or we can swap Shillong for Kaziranga National Park (open roughly November to April).
