About this Mumbai & Maharashtra trip
Start in Mumbai — Marine Drive at dusk, the Gateway of India and street food that never stops — then climb the Bhor Ghat into the monsoon-green Sahyadris at Lonavala. Finish at two of India's greatest monuments: the Kailasa temple at Ellora, carved top-down from a single rock, and the painted Buddhist caves of Ajanta in their horseshoe gorge.

Frequently asked questions
When are Ajanta and Ellora closed?
Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. We schedule the two days so you see both. Elephanta is also closed on Mondays.
Is flash photography allowed at Ajanta?
No. Flash damages the 2,000-year-old murals and is strictly banned. Normal photography without flash is allowed.
Is Lonavala worth it outside the monsoon?
Yes, for the Karla caves and the viewpoints. But it's at its best from July to September, when waterfalls run down every hillside.
Can we fly into Mumbai and out of Aurangabad?
Yes. Aurangabad has flights to Hyderabad via Mumbai or Delhi, and there are direct trains too.
