Overview

About this Muktinath & Pashupatinath trip

Two of the holiest shrines of the Himalaya in one unhurried journey. Begin in Kathmandu with darshan at Pashupatinath, the jyotirlinga-like seat of Lord Shiva on the Bagmati, and the evening aarti on its ghats. Drive to Pokhara by Phewa Lake, then take the short mountain flight up the Kali Gandaki gorge to Jomsom and continue by jeep to Muktinath at 3,710 m. Here, revered by Vaishnavas as one of the 108 Divya Desams and by Buddhists as Chumig Gyatsa, you bathe under the 108 Muktidhara spouts and in the two kunds before darshan of Lord Vishnu as Mukti Narayan. Shaligram stones from the Kali Gandaki, Jwala Mai's eternal flame and an extra night at Jomsom for acclimatisation and weather buffer make this a complete and safe yatra.

Pashupatinath darshan, Pokhara's lakes and the 108 sacred spouts of Muktinath in the Himalaya.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa or passport for Nepal?

No visa is needed. Indian citizens can travel on a valid passport or Voter ID card; children under 15 can use a birth certificate or school ID with a parent. For the Mustang area we also arrange the ACAP permit, for which we need a copy of your ID and a photo.

How high is Muktinath and will I get altitude sickness?

The temple is at 3,710 m. We sleep lower at Jomsom (2,720 m) and visit Muktinath as a day trip, which keeps the risk low. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and avoid the cold bath if you have heart or BP issues.

What if the Jomsom flight is cancelled?

Mountain flights only fly in the early morning and are sometimes cancelled because of wind or cloud. Our itinerary has a buffer night, and if needed we switch to a jeep via the Beni–Jomsom road (about 8 hours) or a helicopter at extra cost.

Can elderly parents do this yatra?

Yes, many of our travellers are seniors. From the Ranipauwa jeep point it is a 15–20 minute uphill walk to the temple; ponies and palkis are available. Tell us about mobility needs so we can plan the helicopter option if required.

Can non-Hindus enter Pashupatinath?

Only Hindus may enter the main courtyard of Pashupatinath. Non-Hindu travellers in a family can view the temple and the aarti from the eastern bank of the Bagmati.
