Overview

About this Chikmagalur trip

Chikmagalur is where coffee first took root in India, said to have been planted on Baba Budangiri from seven beans smuggled from Yemen in the 1600s. Today the hills are covered in shade-grown arabica and robusta estates. You'll stop at the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu on the way from Bengaluru, then spend three nights at a coffee-estate homestay. Days are for sunrise on Mullayanagiri (1,930 m), Karnataka's highest peak, a jeep ride to Hebbe Falls and a walk through the plantation with a planter.

A coffee-estate stay in the Baba Budangiri hills with Karnataka's highest peak, Hebbe Falls and the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How far is Chikmagalur from Bengaluru?

About 245 km, which takes 5–6 hours by road. Mangaluru airport is about 150 km away and Kadur is the nearest railway station.

Are the Hebbe Falls jeeps safe?

The final stretch is on rough estate tracks and is only open to authorised 4x4 jeeps. It's bumpy but driven by experienced local drivers. Access is sometimes closed during heavy rain.

Is the Mullayanagiri road open to private cars?

During busy weekends and festivals the district sometimes runs a booking or shuttle system for Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri. We check the current rules before your trip.

Will we see coffee being harvested?

Picking season runs from roughly November to February. Outside these months you'll still walk the estate and see drying yards and processing facilities.
