About this Bali Temple Trail trip
Bali is the only Hindu island in a Muslim-majority nation, and its faith is living and everyday — offerings on every doorstep, temple festivals in every village. This trail takes you to its holiest temples. Climb the terraces of Pura Besakih, the 'Mother Temple' on the slopes of Mount Agung; take part in a melukat purification bath at the springs of Tirta Empul with a local priest; see the 'Gates of Heaven' at Lempuyang and the lake temple of Ulun Danu Beratan dedicated to the water goddess Dewi Danu. Watch the sun set behind Tanah Lot on its sea rock and over the cliffs of Uluwatu, followed by the Kecak fire dance, which retells the Ramayana. Ubud's rice terraces and a beach finale in Nusa Dua complete the week.
Bali's great Hindu temples — Besakih, Tirta Empul's holy springs, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu's Kecak.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Bali?
Indian passport holders get a visa on arrival (or e-VOA online before travel) for about IDR 500,000, valid for 30 days. Every foreign visitor also pays Bali's IDR 150,000 tourist levy, which we help you pay online in advance.
What happens at the Tirta Empul purification?
You wear a sarong, place an offering, and move along the spouts of the pool, praying and bathing under each one in order. A few spouts are reserved for funeral rites and are skipped; the priest guides you through the sequence.
Are there any temple rules we should know?
Wear a sarong and sash, keep shoulders covered, don't step on offerings and don't climb shrines. By Balinese custom, women who are menstruating are asked not to enter temple grounds, and people with open wounds are also asked to stay outside.
Is the temple architecture similar to Indian temples?
Balinese Hinduism shares the Trimurti, the epics and many festivals with India, but its temples are open-air courtyards with tiered meru towers. The Kecak and other dances retell the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Balinese style.
Is vegetarian food easy to find?
Yes. Ubud has many vegetarian restaurants and there are Indian restaurants in Ubud, Kuta and Nusa Dua. We pre-arrange vegetarian dinners for the group.
