About Nepal

Nepal is the easiest Himalayan escape from India. Indian citizens need no visa, rupees are widely accepted, the food feels familiar and the welcome is genuinely warm. Yet the moment you land in Kathmandu, it feels like another world: pagoda temples and stupas, prayer wheels turning in narrow lanes, and on a clear day a line of snow peaks along the northern horizon.

Our Nepal trips spend two days in the Kathmandu Valley among its UNESCO-listed sites. You will join the evening aarti at Pashupatinath on the banks of the Bagmati, walk around the giant Boudhanath Stupa with Tibetan pilgrims, and explore the medieval Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, where wood-carving and pottery traditions are still alive. Then you fly or drive to Pokhara, a relaxed lake town beneath the Annapurna range. Paddle across Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi temple, rise early for sunrise on Machhapuchhre and the Annapurnas from Sarangkot, and, if you are feeling brave, paraglide over the lake. An Everest mountain flight from Kathmandu can be added on your last morning.

Nepal suits families, couples, senior pilgrims and first-time Himalayan travellers alike. It also works well for those visiting Muktinath or Pashupatinath as part of a pilgrimage, and for honeymooners looking for mountains without long drives. The best weather runs from October to May, with crystal-clear views in autumn and rhododendrons blooming in spring. Pack layers, carry your passport or voter ID, and keep some patience for Kathmandu's traffic; the rewards are well worth it.

When to go

Best time

Autumn

October to November

Clear skies, crisp air and the best mountain views of the year; Dashain and Tihar festivals add colour.

Winter and spring

December to May

Cold mornings in winter and warmer spring days with rhododendron blooms; haze can sometimes hide the peaks in late spring.

Monsoon

June to September

Heavy rain, cloud-covered mountains and occasional landslides on highways; flights to Pokhara can be delayed.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

There are usually no direct flights from Hyderabad; fly via Delhi, Bengaluru or Kolkata to Kathmandu. Total travel time is typically 5–8 hours. Kathmandu to Pokhara is a 25-minute domestic flight or a 6–8 hour drive.

By road

Overland travellers can cross at Sunauli from Gorakhpur, about 7–9 hours by road to Pokhara or 9–10 hours to Kathmandu. It is a useful option when combining Nepal with Varanasi or Lumbini.

Insider tips

  • Carry your passport or voter ID card; children under 15 can travel with a birth certificate or school ID, but check current rules before you travel.
  • Indian ₹100 notes are widely accepted; higher-denomination Indian notes may not be accepted everywhere, so exchange some money into Nepalese rupees.
  • Buy a local Ncell or Nepal Telecom SIM on arrival, as Indian roaming can be expensive.
  • Domestic flights in Nepal can be delayed by weather; keep a buffer day before your international departure.
  • Remove footwear at temples, walk clockwise around stupas and ask before photographing people or rituals.

Pack these

  • Valid Indian passport or voter ID card
  • Warm jacket for Sarangkot mornings
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Indian ₹100 and smaller notes (₹500 notes are accepted; avoid ₹2,000)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Scarf or shawl for temple visits
  • Basic medicines and motion-sickness tablets
  • Indian passport or Voter ID card (no visa needed for Indians)
