About this Taiwan trip

Taiwan is one of Asia's most underrated holidays: safe, spotlessly clean, easy to travel by train and famous for its food. This week starts in Taipei with Taipei 101, the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the Raohe night market, then heads into the hills to release a sky lantern at Shifen and climb the lantern-lit lanes of Jiufen. A train down the east coast takes you to Hualien and the marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge. The final stop is Sun Moon Lake in the central mountains, where you cruise between piers and ride the ropeway, before the high-speed rail takes you back to Taipei.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Taiwan?

Yes. Apply for a tourist visa through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit for the US, UK, Schengen, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan or South Korea, you may qualify for the free online ROC Travel Authorization Certificate instead.

Is Taroko Gorge open after the 2024 earthquake?

The April 2024 earthquake caused landslides and some trails remain closed. Parts of the park have reopened, and our guide follows the current park advisories. If key sections are closed on your dates, we replace the day with the East Rift Valley or Qixingtan coast.

Are there direct flights from India?

There are no direct flights from Hyderabad. The usual routes connect through Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong, taking 9–12 hours in total.

Is vegetarian food easy to find?

Yes. Taiwan has many Buddhist vegetarian restaurants and buffets, marked with the 素 sign, plus Indian restaurants in Taipei.

Is Taiwan safe for families and solo travellers?

Very safe. Crime is low, public transport is excellent and convenience stores are open 24 hours almost everywhere.
