About this Norway Fjords trip
Western Norway is where the fjords are at their most dramatic, and this trip strings the best of them together by train, ferry and road. From Oslo you take the scenic Bergen Line up onto the mountain plateau, then drop down the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world, to the head of the Aurlandsfjord. A cruise through the narrow Nærøyfjord brings you to Bergen and its wooden Hanseatic wharf. The second half heads north to Geiranger, where waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters pour straight into the fjord, before finishing in the art-nouveau port of Ålesund. Summer days are long, with daylight close to 20 hours in June.
Ride the Flåm Railway, cruise the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord, and wander Bergen's colourful Bryggen wharf.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Norway?
Yes. Norway is in the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa issued by the Norwegian mission (through VFS) covers the trip. Apply 6–8 weeks before travel; we provide the itinerary and booking documents.
Will I see the Northern Lights?
Not on this summer trip. The fjords are best from May to September, when nights are too bright for auroras. For Northern Lights you need a winter trip to Tromsø or Lapland, which we can plan separately.
Is Norway very expensive on the ground?
Yes, it is one of Europe's most expensive countries. A simple café lunch costs NOK 200–300. Breakfasts are included and hearty, and we suggest supermarket picnics for some lunches.
How much walking is involved?
Moderate. The trains, cruises and drives do the heavy lifting, but you will walk on uneven paths at viewpoints. The optional 418-step climb in Ålesund can be replaced with a short drive up.
Can we do this trip with children?
Yes. Children usually love the Flåm Railway and the ferries. The Bergen–Geiranger day is long in the car, so we build in regular stops.
