Overview

About this Kenya Safari trip

This is the classic first safari, done properly. You spend two nights inside the Masai Mara ecosystem with pop-up-roof 4x4 game drives at dawn and dusk, when lions, cheetahs and elephants are most active. From July to October the Great Migration pours across the Mara River, and even outside those months the resident wildlife is extraordinary. After the Mara, Lake Naivasha slows the pace with a boat safari among hippos and fish eagles and a walking safari on Crescent Island, where giraffes and zebras graze without predators. The trip closes in Nairobi at the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, so you leave having seen conservation as well as wildlife.

Three game-drive days in the Masai Mara, a boat safari on Lake Naivasha and giraffes up close in Nairobi.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Kenya?

Kenya now uses an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) instead of a visa on arrival. Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel; we fill in the form with you and check your documents.

Is the yellow-fever vaccine mandatory?

Yes, practically. India requires a yellow-fever certificate from anyone returning from Kenya, or you may be quarantined on arrival. Take the vaccine at an authorised centre at least 10 days before departure and carry the certificate.

When can I see the Great Migration?

The herds are usually in the Masai Mara from July to October, with Mara River crossings most likely in August and September. Exact timing depends on the rains, so no operator can guarantee a crossing.

Is the safari suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. The roads to the Mara are bumpy, but there is no trekking. Children aged 6 and above usually enjoy it most, and seniors who can sit through 3–4 hour drives will be comfortable.

What food is available at the camps?

Camps serve buffets with continental, Indian-style curries and fresh fruit. We tell every camp about vegetarian, Jain or other dietary needs in advance.
