About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary amount into an island not much larger than Telangana: ancient rock fortresses, sacred Buddhist temples, cool tea country, rainforest, wildlife parks and a long coastline of palm-fringed beaches. It is barely an hour's flight from South India, it shares the same time zone as India, and its food, culture and Ramayana links make Indian travellers feel instantly at home.

Our six-night package moves in a loop. From Colombo you head to the Cultural Triangle to climb Sigiriya, the 5th-century palace fortress on a 200-metre rock, and on to Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the botanical gardens at Peradeniya. The road then climbs into the hill country at Nuwara Eliya, a cool town of tea estates and colonial bungalows where the Seetha Amman Temple is linked by tradition to the Ramayana. The scenic train ride to Ella, past waterfalls and tea slopes, is one of the most famous rail journeys in Asia, and Ella's Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak make a relaxed final hill stop.

The trip ends on the southwest coast at Bentota, with river safaris, beaches and turtle hatcheries, and a visit to the Dutch-era Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sri Lanka suits families, couples and first-time international travellers. Indians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling, and the island is easy to get around with a private driver. Distances look short on the map, but hill roads are slow, so the itinerary keeps daily drives comfortable.

Top things to do in Sri Lanka

01

Climb Sigiriya Rock

About 1,200 steps lead past ancient frescoes and the giant Lion's Paw gateway to palace ruins on the summit. Start early to avoid the midday heat.

02

Temple of the Tooth, Kandy

Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist shrine holds a relic of the Buddha; the evening puja with drums is the most atmospheric time to visit.

03

Train from Nanu Oya to Ella

The hill country railway threads through tea estates, tunnels and cloud forest in around 3–4 hours, one of the world's great train rides.

04

Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak

Ella's colonial-era viaduct and an easy summit hike with views across the gap make a perfect half-day.

05

Tea estate and Seetha Amman Temple

Tour a working tea factory in Nuwara Eliya and visit the temple linked to Sita's captivity in Ashok Vatika.

06

Galle Fort and Bentota

Walk the ramparts of the 17th-century fort at sunset, then take a Madu or Bentota river safari through mangroves.

When to go

Best time

Dry season, west and south

December to April

Sunny beaches on the southwest coast and clear views in the hill country; the classic touring season.

Southwest monsoon

May to September

Rain on the west and south coasts and in the hills, while the east coast around Trincomalee is at its best.

Inter-monsoon

October and November

Unsettled weather with afternoon showers across much of the island, but lower prices and fewer visitors.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Hyderabad to Colombo takes about 2–2.5 hours direct when operating, or 3.5–5 hours via Chennai or Bengaluru.

By road

Within Sri Lanka, a private car with driver is the most comfortable way to tour; Colombo to Sigiriya is about 4–5 hours.

By train

The Kandy–Nanu Oya–Ella hill country line is a highlight in its own right; reserved observation and first-class seats sell out early.

Insider tips

  • Apply for the ETA online on the official Sri Lankan portal before you fly and carry a printout.
  • Dress modestly at temples, covering shoulders and knees, and remove footwear and hats.
  • Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue for photos; it is considered disrespectful.
  • Indian rupees are not widely accepted; carry US dollars or use a forex card and exchange to LKR.
  • Book the Kandy–Ella train seats in advance or let us arrange them, as reserved carriages fill quickly.

Pack these

  • White or light modest clothing for temples
  • Socks for hot temple floors
  • Light jacket for Nuwara Eliya (10–18°C)
  • Good walking shoes for Sigiriya's 1,200 steps
  • Umbrella or rain jacket
  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent
  • UK Type G / Type D plug adapter
  • Passport valid for 6 months and a printed ETA approval
