About this Laos trip
Laos is the calm, unhurried corner of Southeast Asia and a natural pick for Buddhist-heritage travellers. Start in Vientiane at the golden Pha That Luang, then ride the new Laos–China railway north to Vang Vieng, where karst peaks rise over the Nam Song river and hot-air balloons float at sunrise. The trip ends in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed town of gilded temples and French-colonial villas, where you watch the dawn alms procession, swim below the turquoise tiers of Kuang Si Falls and toast the sunset on the Mekong.
Slow-paced Laos: saffron-robed monks, turquoise waterfalls and lazy Mekong sunsets.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Laos?
Yes, but it is simple: Indian passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Vientiane and Luang Prabang airports, or apply for the official Lao e-visa before travel. The fee is roughly USD 40–50. Carry two passport photos for visa on arrival.
How do I fly to Laos from India?
There are no direct flights. The usual route is via Bangkok on Thai Airways or Lao Airlines, or via Hanoi or Kuala Lumpur, taking about 7–9 hours including the connection.
Can I take part in the alms giving?
Yes, if done respectfully: buy sticky rice from a reputable vendor the night before, dress modestly, stay silent and do not use flash or block the monks' path. Many travellers prefer to simply observe.
Is Laos good for senior travellers?
Very. Distances are short, the new train is smooth and comfortable, and Luang Prabang is flat and walkable. Phousi Hill has 300-plus steps but is optional.
Is vegetarian food available?
Yes. Lao cuisine uses lots of vegetables and sticky rice, and Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang all have Indian restaurants.
