About Mysuru

This seven-night journey through Karnataka strings together royal palaces, misty coffee hills, the finest temple carving in South India and the ruins of a great medieval empire. It begins in Mysuru, the former capital of the Wodeyar kings and the city of the famous Dasara festival, and ends among the boulders of Hampi.

In Mysuru you tour the Mysore Palace, which is lit by nearly 100,000 bulbs on Sunday and holiday evenings, climb Chamundi Hills to the Chamundeshwari Temple and see the musical fountains at Brindavan Gardens. The road then rises to Coorg, also known as Kodagu, a district of coffee and pepper estates, waterfalls and Kodava culture, where you visit Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat and the Tibetan Golden Temple at Bylakuppe. Next come Belur and Halebidu, whose 12th-century Hoysala temples are covered in some of the most intricate stone carving anywhere in India and are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a stop in the coffee country of Chikkamagaluru.

The finale is Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, where temples, bazaars and royal enclosures stand among giant granite boulders along the Tungabhadra River. The stone chariot at the Vittala Temple, the living Virupaksha Temple and a coracle ride on the river are the highlights. It is a rich trip for families, history lovers and photographers, and Hampi is close enough to Hyderabad to drive home at the end. Distances between stops are moderate, and the route moves steadily north so there is no doubling back.

When to go

Best time

Winter

October to March

Pleasant days across the route, Mysuru Dasara in September or October and the most comfortable weather for Hampi's ruins.

Summer

April to May

Very hot in Hampi, often above 38°C, though Coorg and Chikkamagaluru remain cooler.

Monsoon

June to September

Coorg and Chikkamagaluru turn lush and waterfalls swell, but heavy rain in the hills can disrupt plans.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly Hyderabad to Bengaluru in about 1 hour 15 minutes, then drive about 3.5 hours to Mysuru. Mysuru also has a small airport with limited flights.

By train

Overnight trains run from Hyderabad to Bengaluru in about 11–12 hours, with frequent trains on to Mysuru; for the return, Hosapete near Hampi has rail links back towards Hyderabad.

By road

Hampi is about 380 km from Hyderabad, a drive of around 7 hours, making a road return at the end of the trip practical.

Insider tips

  • Mysore Palace is lit on Sunday and public holiday evenings, usually for about 45 minutes; plan your Mysuru night around it.
  • Footwear and cameras are not allowed inside parts of the palace, so carry little into the complex.
  • Hampi is spread over a wide area; hire a guide for the main day and an auto or bicycle for the rest.
  • Carry a hat, sunscreen and water at Hampi, where shade is scarce among the ruins.
  • Dress modestly for temples, and expect to remove footwear at Belur, Halebidu and Virupaksha.

Pack these

  • Comfortable walking shoes — Hampi has a lot of walking on rock
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Light jacket for Coorg nights
  • Insect repellent
  • Modest clothing for temples
  • Water bottle
