About Gokarna

Gokarna is a small temple town on the Karnataka coast that has quietly become one of the most loved beach getaways in South India. It is what many travellers wish Goa still was: a string of crescent beaches tucked between rocky headlands, reached by cliff paths rather than highways, with shacks, hammocks and sunsets over the Arabian Sea instead of crowds and nightclubs.

The town itself is a pilgrimage centre built around the Mahabaleshwar Temple, which houses the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva and draws devotees year-round. A short drive south, Kudle Beach, Om Beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach line up along the coast. The best way to see them is the coastal trek that links one to the next over the cliffs, with boat rides available to bring you back. Om Beach, named for its shape when seen from the clifftop, is the most photographed spot.

Our three-night package pairs the beaches with Murudeshwar, an hour and a half south, where a towering Shiva statue overlooks the sea and boats run out to Netrani Island for snorkelling and scuba. Gokarna suits friends' groups, couples and anyone who wants a long weekend of sea, sun and seafood without the commercial feel of bigger resort towns. Travellers from Hyderabad usually fly into Hubballi or Goa and drive the final stretch. The drive itself runs through the Western Ghats and along the coast, so it is part of the experience rather than a chore. Evenings are slow and social, with bonfires, fresh seafood and the sound of the waves, which is exactly why so many visitors end up staying an extra night.

Top things to do in Gokarna

01

Beach trek from Kudle to Paradise

A coastal trail of 7–8 km links Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches over rocky headlands. Start early, carry water and take a boat back from Om Beach.

02

Om Beach from the clifftop

The viewpoint above Om Beach shows its twin curves clearly. Come down afterwards for a swim in the calmer section and a meal at the beach shacks.

03

Mahabaleshwar Temple darshan

One of Karnataka's most sacred Shiva shrines, believed to hold the Atmalinga brought by Ravana. Traditional dress is expected and men remove shirts inside.

04

Murudeshwar Shiva statue

A 37-metre Shiva statue sits on a promontory beside the sea, with a 20-storey gopuram whose lift offers sweeping views of the coast.

05

Netrani Island snorkelling and diving

Boats from Murudeshwar run to Netrani, one of India's better dive sites, between roughly November and April, with corals, reef fish and occasional turtles.

06

Sunset at Kudle Beach

Kudle faces due west and has a relaxed line of cafes, making it the classic place to end the day with a fresh juice and the sun dropping into the sea.

When to go

Best time

Winter

October to March

Clear skies, calm seas and pleasant evenings. December and New Year are busiest, so book stays early.

Summer

April and May

Hot and humid but quiet, with good beach time in the mornings and evenings.

Monsoon

June to September

Heavy rain and rough seas; swimming is unsafe, many shacks close and water sports stop, though the hills turn a vivid green.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly Hyderabad to Hubballi (about 1 hour 15 minutes) or to Goa (about 1 hour 20 minutes), then drive roughly 3.5–4 hours to Gokarna.

By train

Overnight trains run from Hyderabad to Hubballi in about 12–14 hours; from there it is a road transfer, or connect to Gokarna Road on the Konkan line.

By road

Gokarna is about 650 km from Hyderabad via Raichur and Hubballi, a full-day drive of 11–13 hours; overnight private buses also run to Kumta and Gokarna.

Insider tips

  • Swim only in marked, calm sections; currents can be strong around the headlands, especially at Paradise and Half Moon beaches.
  • Wear proper shoes for the beach trek, as the rocky stretches between beaches are slippery and uneven.
  • Carry cash, since ATMs in town can run dry on long weekends and many beach shacks prefer cash or UPI on a weak signal.
  • Dress modestly in town and at the temple; beachwear is fine on the beaches but not in the main bazaar.
  • Netrani dive trips depend on sea conditions, so keep a buffer day if diving is your priority.

Pack these

  • Swimwear and quick-dry clothes
  • Trekking sandals or shoes with grip for the coastal trail
  • Traditional wear for Mahabaleshwar temple (dhoti/saree)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and hat
  • Dry bag for phone and wallet
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Torch for beach paths after dark
Good To Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Om Beach and Kudle Beach are easily reached by road or boat and have calm sections, and the temple town appeals to older family members.
