About Tirupati

Tirumala, in the Seshachalam hills above Tirupati, is home to the temple of Sri Venkateswara Swamy, one of the most visited shrines in the world. For families in Hyderabad it is close enough to be a weekend pilgrimage, and the part that needs the most planning is the darshan itself. With a pre-booked Special Entry Darshan slot, the queue moves on a fixed schedule rather than an open-ended wait, which makes the trip far more comfortable for children and elders.

The weekend usually begins with an overnight AC train from Hyderabad. After freshening up in Tirupati you visit Sri Padmavathi Ammavari temple at Tiruchanur, since tradition holds that the Goddess should be visited before the Lord, along with Kapila Theertham at the foot of the hills and the Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple in town. On darshan day the car climbs the ghat road to Tirumala, and around your slot there is time for Akasa Ganga, Papavinasanam and the Srivari Padalu viewpoint. Many devotees also offer their hair at Kalyanakatta and collect the famous laddu prasadam before leaving the hill.

On the last day the route passes Srikalahasti, the Vayu linga among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and a temple known for Rahu–Ketu pooja, before the overnight train home. Meals throughout are vegetarian, and the hill itself is strictly alcohol-free, meat-free and tobacco-free. The temple is busy every day of the year, so the real choice is between calmer weekdays and the grand but crowded festival periods such as Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadasi.

When to go

Best time

Cool season

September to February

Pleasant days and cool evenings on the hill. Brahmotsavam (Sept/Oct) and Vaikuntha Ekadasi (Dec/Jan) bring very heavy crowds; book well ahead.

Summer

March to June

Hot in Tirupati town, milder on Tirumala. School holidays in April–May mean long queues for free darshan.

Monsoon

July to August

Lush hills and full waterfalls at Kapila Theertham. Ghat roads are well maintained, though rain can slow traffic.
