About Kenya

Kenya is the classic first safari, and the Masai Mara is its finest stage. The Mara's open grasslands make wildlife easy to see, and game drives in pop-up-roof 4x4 vehicles at dawn and dusk, when animals are most active, bring you close to lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo and giraffes. From around July to October the Great Migration arrives from Tanzania's Serengeti, and the crossings of the Mara River are among the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth. Even outside those months, the resident wildlife is outstanding.

After the intensity of the Mara, Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley slows the pace. A boat safari takes you among hippos and fish eagles, and a walking safari on Crescent Island lets you stroll among giraffes, zebras and antelopes in an area without large predators. The journey ends in Nairobi, where the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's elephant orphanage show the conservation work behind Kenya's wildlife.

Kenya is well suited to Indian travellers. There is a long-established Indian community, Indian vegetarian food is easy to find in Nairobi, and safari lodges are used to dietary requests. Flights from Mumbai are short, and Kenya runs an online electronic travel authorisation for visitors. A Kenya safari works for families with older children, couples and photographers alike. Two full nights in the Mara gives you at least four game drives, which greatly improves your chances of seeing big cats, and the lodges range from comfortable tented camps to more luxurious properties. Pack light, neutral clothing and a good pair of binoculars.

When to go

Best time

Migration season

July to October

Dry, sunny weather with the Great Migration in the Mara and river crossings. Peak demand, so book early.

Short dry season

January to March

Warm, dry weather and excellent resident game viewing, with calving season in the wider ecosystem and fewer visitors.

Rainy seasons

April–June and November–December

The long rains in April and May and short rains later in the year bring green landscapes, lower rates and muddy tracks.

  • Wide-brimmed hat and SPF 50 sunscreen
