About Georgia

Georgia is one of Europe's best-kept secrets for Indian travellers: a hospitable country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, with cobbled old towns, mountaintop churches, snow peaks of the Greater Caucasus and one of the oldest wine traditions on earth. It is friendlier on the budget than Western Europe, it has an easy online visa process for Indians, and it feels genuinely different from anywhere else you may have been.

Our Georgia trip spends three nights in Tbilisi, the capital, where you explore the old town's balconied houses, ride the cable car up to the Narikala fortress, relax in the domed sulphur baths of Abanotubani and walk across the Bridge of Peace. A day trip goes to Mtskheta, the ancient capital, for the UNESCO-listed Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Then you drive the Georgian Military Road past the Ananuri fortress on the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir and the Gudauri viewpoint to stay overnight in Kazbegi, beneath the hilltop Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek. The trip finishes in the vineyards of Kakheti, with a night in the hilltop town of Signagi and tastings of wine made in traditional clay qvevri vessels.

Georgia suits couples, honeymooners, friend groups and families who enjoy scenery and culture. Summer and early autumn bring green mountains and the grape harvest, while December to March turns Gudauri into a ski resort and Kazbegi into a snow landscape. Food is hearty and delicious, with plenty of vegetarian options, and Indian restaurants are easy to find in Tbilisi. Pack layers, because the mountains are much cooler than the capital.

Hike or take a 4x4 up to the 14th-century church framed against Mount Kazbek, one of the most iconic views in the Caucasus.

06

Winter in Gudauri

When to go

Best time

Late spring and summer

May to August

Green mountains, wildflowers and warm days in Tbilisi; the mountain roads to Kazbegi are fully open.

Autumn

September to October

The grape harvest, rtveli, in Kakheti, golden foliage and mild weather; an excellent time for wine lovers.

Winter

December to March

Snow in Gudauri and Kazbegi, skiing and cosy wine bars; the Military Road can close temporarily after heavy snowfall.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

There are no direct flights from Hyderabad. One-stop flights via Dubai, Sharjah, Doha or Istanbul reach Tbilisi in about 9–13 hours including the connection, and some budget carriers fly into Kutaisi.

By road

Within Georgia, Tbilisi to Kazbegi is about 3–4 hours by road, and Tbilisi to Signagi in Kakheti about 2 hours. A private driver-guide is the most comfortable way to cover the circuit.

Insider tips

  • Apply for the Georgian e-visa at least a month before travel; if you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, you may be eligible for visa-free entry, but check current rules.
  • Carry proof of travel insurance and hotel bookings, as immigration may ask for them on arrival.
  • Pack warm layers even in summer for Kazbegi, which is far cooler than Tbilisi, especially in the evenings.
  • Use Bolt or Yandex Go for taxis in Tbilisi; it is cheaper and avoids haggling.
  • Dress modestly for churches: women should cover their heads and men should avoid shorts; scarves and wraps are often provided at the entrance.

Pack these

  • Warm jacket for Kazbegi even in summer
  • Comfortable shoes for cobbled streets
  • Headscarf (women) and long skirt or trousers for churches
  • European plug adapter (Type C/F)
  • US dollars or euros to exchange for lari
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Swimsuit if you plan a sulphur bath
