About Bhutan

Bhutan is the small Himalayan kingdom that measures its success in Gross National Happiness. Forests still cover most of the country, prayer flags flutter over every pass and the great white dzongs, part fortress and part monastery, remain the centres of local life. For Indian travellers it is unusually easy to visit: no visa is needed, the ngultrum is pegged to the rupee and the cultural ties run deep.

Our six-night package covers the western heartland. In Paro you hike to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery that clings to a cliff 900 metres above the valley, and drive up to Chele La, one of the highest motorable passes in the country. In Thimphu, the only capital in the world without traffic lights, you visit the giant Buddha Dordenma statue, the Memorial Chorten and the Tashichho Dzong. Crossing Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and, on clear days, a sweep of Himalayan peaks, you descend to the warm valley of Punakha to see the Punakha Dzong at the meeting of two rivers.

Bhutan is calm, clean and relaxed, and it suits families, couples and anyone looking for a gentle Himalayan trip with meaning. Indian visitors need an entry permit, issued against a passport or voter ID, and pay a per-night Sustainable Development Fee. Travel within the country is with a licensed guide and vehicle, which our package includes. Expect slow mountain roads, quiet evenings, fresh air and a pace of life that makes it easy to switch off. Many travellers say the Tiger's Nest climb is the single most memorable morning of any trip they have taken.

Top things to do in Bhutan

01

Tiger's Nest hike

A 4–6 hour round-trip walk climbs through pine forest to the Taktsang monastery, built where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. Ponies can carry you part of the way up.

02

Punakha Dzong

Bhutan's most beautiful dzong stands where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet, especially lovely in spring when the jacaranda trees bloom.

03

Dochula Pass

At about 3,100 m, 108 memorial chortens frame views of the eastern Himalaya on clear winter and autumn days.

04

Buddha Dordenma, Thimphu

A 51-metre bronze Buddha sits above the capital, housing thousands of smaller Buddha statues inside.

05

Chele La Pass

The drive from Paro to nearly 3,990 m offers views towards Jomolhari and the Haa Valley, with prayer flags strung across the ridge.

06

Traditional hot-stone bath

River stones heated over a fire are dropped into a wooden tub of water infused with herbs, a perfect way to recover after the Tiger's Nest hike.

When to go

Best time

Autumn

September to November

Clear skies, mountain views and major tsechu festivals in Thimphu and elsewhere. The most popular season, so book early.

Spring

March to May

Rhododendrons and jacarandas in bloom, mild days and the Paro Tsechu festival.

Winter and monsoon

December to February; June to August

Winter is cold but clear with fewer visitors; the monsoon brings rain, leeches on trails and occasional road delays.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly from Hyderabad to Delhi, Kolkata or Bagdogra and connect on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro; total travel time is usually 6–9 hours including the connection.

By road

Alternatively, fly Hyderabad to Bagdogra, drive about 4 hours to the border town of Jaigaon–Phuentsholing for the entry permit, then 5–6 hours on to Thimphu.

Door-to-door

Flights, transfers and stays booked together

Insider tips

  • Indian travellers need a passport or voter ID valid for at least six months; Aadhaar and driving licences are not accepted for the entry permit. Children may use a birth certificate; check current rules.
  • Dress modestly for dzongs and temples, with full sleeves and long trousers or skirts, and remove hats inside.
  • Smoking in public places is restricted and tobacco sale is regulated, so check the allowance before you carry any.
  • Paro flights are weather-dependent and often schedule early departures, so keep a little buffer in your plans.
  • Carry smaller INR notes; the ngultrum and rupee are interchangeable, but some shops cannot change large notes.

Pack these

  • Valid Indian passport (or voter ID) — 6 months validity
  • Warm jacket and layers — evenings are cold year-round
  • Sturdy shoes with grip for the Tiger's Nest hike
  • Long-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers or skirts for dzongs
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Personal medicines
  • Reusable water bottle
