About Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Banaras, is among the oldest living cities in the world and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. Its ghats step down to the Ganga in an unbroken crescent, and life here moves to the rhythm of the river: dawn prayers and holy dips, the steady work of the cremation ghats, and the blaze of lamps at the evening aarti. For devotees from Hyderabad it is often a once-in-a-lifetime journey, and it rewards those who come with patience and an open heart.

Our Varanasi trips pair Kashi with Ayodhya in one gentle, well-paced journey. In Varanasi you take darshan at the expanded Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, sit for the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat with boat seats arranged, and glide past more than eighty ghats on a sunrise boat ride. A half-day goes to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, with the Dhamek Stupa and the museum's Lion Capital. Then you drive to Ayodhya for darshan of Ram Lalla at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, visit Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan, and join the evening aarti on the banks of the Saryu.

The journey suits families, senior citizens and devotees travelling in groups, and we plan it with hotels close to the ghats, comfortable vehicles and enough rest between darshans. The lanes of the old city are narrow and crowded, so a local guide makes a real difference. Between temples there is time to taste Banarasi chaat and lassi, and to visit a weaving workshop where the famous silk saris are still made on handlooms.

Drift past Assi, Kedar, Harishchandra and Manikarnika ghats as the city wakes, with pilgrims bathing and prayers echoing across the water.

Pray at one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, now approached through the spacious Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor from the river.

When to go

Best time

Winter

October to March

Cool, comfortable days ideal for ghat walks and boat rides; Dev Deepawali in November lights the ghats with lakhs of lamps. Fog can delay winter flights.

Summer

April to June

Very hot afternoons above 40°C; plan darshans for early morning and evening and rest at midday.

Monsoon

July to September

The Ganga rises and the evening aarti may move to higher steps; boat rides can be restricted when the river is in spate. Sawan brings large crowds to Kashi Vishwanath.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Direct flights from Hyderabad to Varanasi (VNS) take about 2 hours. Ayodhya's airport (AYJ) has growing connectivity, so you can fly into Varanasi and out of Ayodhya to avoid backtracking.

By train

Trains from Secunderabad and Hyderabad to Varanasi or nearby Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction take roughly 26–32 hours. Book AC berths well ahead in festival season.

By road

Varanasi to Ayodhya is about 200 km on good highways, roughly 4–5 hours by car, and Sarnath is just 10 km from the city centre.

Insider tips

  • Mobile phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath; use the official lockers or leave them at the hotel.
  • Dress modestly for temple visits, and at the burning ghats do not photograph cremations; it is deeply disrespectful.
  • Darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir has fixed timings and security checks; keep ID handy and check current darshan and aarti pass rules before you travel.
  • Take a registered boat with life jackets for the aarti and sunrise rides, and agree on the price before boarding.
  • Old-city lanes are narrow and crowded, so wear comfortable footwear and keep a close eye on elderly family members and children.

Pack these

  • Modest, comfortable clothing — traditional wear preferred for temples
  • Slip-on footwear (shoes are removed often)
  • Shawl for early-morning boat rides in winter
  • Small cloth bag for prasad
  • Original photo ID (checked at Kashi Vishwanath and Ram Mandir)
  • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
  • Passport or voter ID for the Nepal border (Aadhaar alone is not accepted)
  • Modest, light-coloured clothing for temples and meditation
