About Port Blair

The Andaman Islands are India's answer to the tropical-island dream: powder-white sand, water so clear you can see your feet in three metres of it, and coral reefs a short boat ride from the shore. Port Blair, officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024, is the gateway, with direct and one-stop flights from Hyderabad and ferries fanning out to the outer islands.

Our six-day Andaman trip balances history with beach time. In Port Blair you visit the Cellular Jail, where freedom fighters were imprisoned under British rule, and stay for its moving light and sound show in the evening, along with Corbyn's Cove beach and the museums. Then a fast catamaran takes you to Havelock, now Swaraj Dweep, for two nights: sunset at Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among Asia's best, and a boat trip to Elephant Beach for snorkelling over coral. Scuba diving for beginners is possible here, with no prior experience needed. The trip ends with a quiet night on Neil Island, now Shaheed Dweep, with its natural rock bridge and the calm shores of Bharatpur and Laxmanpur beaches.

The Andamans suit honeymooners, families with children and anyone who wants time by the sea without leaving India. No permit is needed for Indian citizens, and the season runs from November to April, when seas are calm and visibility underwater is at its best. Inter-island ferries are the backbone of any trip, so we book them in advance and plan buffer time for weather. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, keep plastic to a minimum and treat the coral gently; these are fragile and protected waters.

Top things to do in Port Blair

01

Cellular Jail light and sound show

Walk the corridors of the national memorial where freedom fighters were imprisoned, and watch the evening show narrating its history.

02

Radhanagar Beach sunset

Watch the sun set over one of Asia's most celebrated beaches on Havelock, with a long curve of white sand and forest behind it.

03

Snorkelling at Elephant Beach

Take a speedboat from Havelock to shallow coral reefs teeming with fish; sea walking and glass-bottom boats suit non-swimmers.

04

Scuba diving

Try a beginner's discover dive with certified operators on Havelock or Neil, no swimming certification required, or complete a PADI course.

05

Neil Island's natural bridge

See the rock formation at low tide, cycle between Bharatpur, Laxmanpur and Sitapur beaches and enjoy the slow island life.

06

Ross and North Bay islands

Explore the ruins of the British headquarters on Ross Island, now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, and snorkel or take a semi-submarine at North Bay.

When to go

Best time

Peak season

November to April

Calm seas, sunny days and the best underwater visibility; Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks.

Pre-monsoon

May

Hot and humid with rising seas; still good for beaches early in the month, with occasional ferry cancellations.

Monsoon

June to October

Heavy rain and rough seas cause frequent ferry cancellations and suspend water sports; good hotel offers but plan flexible dates.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Flights from Hyderabad to Port Blair take about 2.5 hours direct when available, or 4–6 hours via Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru. Most flights land in the morning, in time for the afternoon ferry or city tour.

By ferry

Private catamarans such as Makruzz, Nautika and Green Ocean connect Port Blair, Havelock and Neil in about 1.5–2.5 hours each way; book in advance in peak season. Government ships from Chennai or Visakhapatnam take about three days and are rarely used by tourists.

Insider tips

  • Book inter-island ferries well in advance during peak season, and keep one buffer day before your flight home in case of weather delays.
  • Carry cash; ATMs on Havelock and Neil can run dry, and mobile data is slow on the islands, though Airtel and BSNL work best.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on coral; it is protected, and damaging it carries heavy penalties.
  • Swim only at beaches with lifeguards, follow flag warnings and avoid entering the sea after dark.
  • No permit is needed for Indian citizens to visit Port Blair, Havelock and Neil, but tribal reserves are strictly off-limits.

Pack these

  • Swimwear, rash guard and quick-dry clothes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Flip-flops and water shoes for rocky beaches
  • Government photo ID (checked at the airport and jetties)
  • Cash — ATMs on Neil are limited
  • Hat and sunglasses
