About Nepal & Tibet (China)

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the world. Mount Kailash, rising to around 6,638 metres in western Tibet, is revered by Hindus as the abode of Lord Shiva and is equally sacred to Buddhists, Jains and followers of Bon. At its foot lies Lake Mansarovar, whose clear blue waters at about 4,590 metres are believed to cleanse the soul. For many devotees, this journey is the fulfilment of a lifelong prayer.

We run the yatra via Kathmandu on the shorter Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa route. After a flight to Nepalgunj, small aircraft and helicopter hops take you over the Himalaya to Simikot and Hilsa on the Tibet border, replacing several days of rough driving. On the Tibetan side you spend two acclimatisation nights at Purang (Taklakot) before reaching the lake. At Mansarovar, pilgrims take a holy dip where conditions allow and perform puja and havan on the shore. The yatra then moves to Darchen for the three-day outer parikrama of Kailash, staying at Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk, and crossing the Dolma La pass at about 5,630 metres.

This is a demanding high-altitude journey that calls for good health, preparation and a respectful, unhurried pace. A Hindi-speaking yatra leader, Sherpa crew, oxygen cylinders and pure vegetarian meals are with the group throughout. The Tibet Travel Permit and Chinese group visa are arranged through our Kathmandu partner, and the season runs only from about May to September, when the high passes are open. Every yatri should travel with patience and humility, as weather, permits and altitude set the pace on the plateau.

When to go

Best time

Summer yatra

June to August

The main pilgrimage window, with the warmest days. Rain on the Nepal side can delay small-aircraft flights, so build in buffer days.

Early and late season

May and September

Cold nights and clear skies; the full moon in these months is popular. Late-season snow is possible at Dolma La.

Closed season

October to April

Extreme cold, snow and closed passes; the yatra does not operate in these months.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly Hyderabad to Kathmandu, usually via Delhi or another Indian hub; expect around 5–7 hours including the connection.

By flight

From Kathmandu, fly to Nepalgunj (about 1 hour), then by small aircraft to Simikot and by helicopter to Hilsa on the Tibet border. These flights are weather-dependent.

By road

From Hilsa, the drive to Purang (Taklakot), Mansarovar and Darchen is by vehicle on the Tibetan plateau.

Insider tips

  • Acclimatise slowly: rest during the Purang nights, drink plenty of water, avoid exertion on arrival and tell the yatra leader at once about headache, nausea or breathlessness.
  • Consult your doctor and get a full medical check-up before booking; people with heart or lung conditions need medical advice first.
  • Train for at least two months with daily walking and stair climbing to prepare for the parikrama.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months; send scanned copies early so the Chinese group visa and Tibet Travel Permit can be processed in time.
  • Pack thermals, a down jacket, waterproofs, gloves, a woollen cap, sunglasses and sunscreen; temperatures fall below freezing at night.

Pack these
