About Mumbai

Mumbai is India's most energetic city: a financial capital, the home of Bollywood and a place where Gothic railway stations, Art Deco apartment blocks and fishing villages share the same coastline. This package uses Mumbai as the starting point for a wider journey through Maharashtra, from the city's seafront to the green Sahyadri ghats and the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora.

In Mumbai you see the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, take the ferry to the Elephanta Caves with their monumental Shiva sculptures, walk Marine Drive at sunset and pass through the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The trip then climbs into the Western Ghats to Lonavala, famous for its viewpoints, forts and chikki, before heading to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the city formerly known as Aurangabad.

From there you visit two of India's greatest monuments. At Ellora, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves were carved side by side over several centuries, and the Kailasa Temple was cut from a single rock from the top down. At Ajanta, painted Buddhist caves from as early as the 2nd century BCE preserve some of the finest ancient art in Asia. The trip suits families, history lovers and anyone who wants to combine a big-city break with India's heritage. Note that Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays, so the itinerary is timed around those days. The weather is kindest between October and March, while the monsoon transforms the ghats into a carpet of green and waterfalls.

Top things to do in Mumbai

01

Gateway of India and Colaba

Start at the 1924 arch on the harbour, then walk past the Taj Mahal Palace hotel into the cafes and street stalls of Colaba Causeway.

02

Elephanta Caves

A one-hour ferry from the Gateway reaches the island caves, where the three-headed Sadashiva sculpture is one of India's masterpieces. Closed on Mondays.

03

Marine Drive at sunset

The curving seafront known as the Queen's Necklace is at its best at dusk, when the streetlights come on around the bay.

Lonavala and the Sahyadri ghats

See Tiger's Point and Lion's Point, the Karla and Bhaja caves and, in the monsoon, waterfalls tumbling from every ridge.

05

Kailasa Temple at Ellora

Cave 16 at Ellora is the largest monolithic rock-cut structure in the world, carved from a single basalt cliff. Closed on Tuesdays.

06

Ajanta's painted caves

When to go

Best time

Winter

October to March

Warm, dry days and comfortable evenings, the best time for city sightseeing and the caves.

Monsoon

June to September

Mumbai floods easily and Elephanta ferries may stop, but Lonavala and the ghats are lush and full of waterfalls.

Summer

April and May

Hot and humid in Mumbai and very hot inland around Ajanta and Ellora; plan sightseeing early in the day.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Hyderabad to Mumbai is a 1 hour 20 minute flight with many daily departures; return from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar via Mumbai, Delhi or direct where available.

By train

Overnight trains link Hyderabad and Mumbai in about 13–16 hours, and the Devagiri Express also connects Secunderabad with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

By road

Mumbai to Lonavala is about 2 hours on the Expressway, and Lonavala to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar about 5–6 hours via Pune or the Samruddhi Expressway.
