About Leh

Ladakh is high, dry and enormous, a land of barren mountains, white-washed monasteries and lakes so blue they barely look real. Leh, the capital, sits at about 3,500 metres, and almost everything here begins with that altitude. Flying in from Hyderabad via Delhi, you go from sea level to thin mountain air in a few hours, which is why every good Ladakh trip starts by doing very little at all.

Our seven-day Ladakh itinerary gives your body two easy days in Leh before going higher. You will rest, then explore gently: Shanti Stupa at sunset, Leh Palace, the market, and the monasteries of Thiksey and Hemis, along with the Hall of Fame war museum and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar at Nimmu. Then you cross Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world, into the Nubra Valley for the sand dunes of Hunder, double-humped Bactrian camels and the giant Maitreya Buddha at Diskit Monastery. From Nubra you follow the Shyok river to Pangong Tso, the lake that shifts from turquoise to deep blue through the day, before returning to Leh over Chang La.

Ladakh suits adventurous families, couples, photographers and bikers, as long as everyone is in reasonable health. Inner Line Permits for Nubra and Pangong, oxygen in the vehicle and experienced local drivers are part of our plan. The season runs from May to September, when the passes are open and days are warm, though nights at Pangong stay cold even in August. Pack for sun, wind and chill all at once, and you will come home with memories unlike any other trip in India.

Top things to do in Leh

01

Khardung La

Drive over one of the world's highest motorable passes, with prayer flags snapping in the wind and views across the Karakoram.

02

Nubra Valley and Hunder dunes

Ride a double-humped Bactrian camel across cold-desert sand dunes and visit the hilltop Diskit Monastery with its giant Maitreya Buddha.

03

Pangong Tso

Watch the lake change colour from turquoise to sapphire as the light moves, and stay overnight in a lakeside camp under brilliant stars.

04

Thiksey and Hemis monasteries

Visit Thiksey's hilltop gompa, often compared to the Potala Palace, and Hemis, the largest monastery in Ladakh; join morning prayers if you are early.

05

Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace

Watch sunset over Leh from the Shanti Stupa and explore the nine-storey palace that overlooks the old town.

06

Magnetic Hill and Sangam

Stop at the famous optical-illusion stretch of road and the confluence of the green Indus and muddy Zanskar near Nimmu.

When to go

Best time

Peak summer

June to August

All passes and lakes are accessible, days are warm and the Hemis festival usually falls in June or July; book flights early.

Shoulder months

May and September

Fewer tourists and crisp clear skies; early May may still see snow on passes, and September nights get cold quickly.

Winter

October to April

Extremely cold, with temperatures far below freezing; roads close and only flights reach Leh. Suitable only for specialised trips such as the Chadar trek.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly Hyderabad to Delhi (about 2 hours 15 minutes) and connect to Leh (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Total travel time is usually 5–7 hours. Morning flights into Leh are the most reliable because of afternoon winds.

By road

The Manali–Leh highway (about 430 km, two days) and the Srinagar–Leh route via Kargil (about 420 km, two days) open in summer. They are spectacular but should be done only after acclimatising gradually.

  • Skyu and chhutagi

Hearty Ladakhi pasta stews with vegetables, best tried at local restaurants in Leh's old town.

  • Butter tea and apricot treats

Salty gur gur cha butter tea, and dried apricots and apricot jam from local orchards, are Ladakhi staples.

  • Tibetan bread and café culture

Leh's German bakeries and cafés serve fresh bread, apple pie and sea-buckthorn juice for easy breakfasts.

Insider tips

  • Rest completely for the first 24–36 hours in Leh; no sightseeing, no climbing stairs quickly and plenty of water. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, however fit.
  • Consult your doctor before the trip about acclimatisation medicines such as Diamox, especially if you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions.
  • Inner Line Permits and the environment fee are required for Nubra, Pangong and other protected areas; carry several photocopies of your ID, as checkposts keep copies.
  • Only postpaid mobile connections work reliably in Ladakh; prepaid SIMs from other states usually do not. Expect patchy or no signal at Pangong and parts of Nubra.
  • Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and lip balm along with warm layers; the sun is harsh at altitude and the wind is cold.

Pack these

  • Layered warm clothing — down jacket, fleece and thermals
  • Woollen cap, gloves and warm socks
  • UV-protection sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen
  • Lip balm and heavy moisturiser
  • Reusable water bottle (drink 3–4 litres a day)
  • Diamox only after consulting your doctor
  • Original photo ID and two passport photos for permits
  • Postpaid SIM (Jio/Airtel/BSNL postpaid work best)
