About Jaipur

Jaipur is the gateway to Rajasthan, and our trips use it as the first stop on a royal loop through the state's four great cities. The Pink City itself is a planned 18th-century capital of bazaars and palaces, with Amber Fort rising over Maota Lake, the honeycomb façade of Hawa Mahal and the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar. It is an easy two-hour flight from Hyderabad and the perfect introduction to the colour, craft and hospitality of Rajasthan.

From Jaipur the route heads south past the ramparts of Chittorgarh to Udaipur, the city of lakes, for a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola and the sprawling City Palace. It then crosses the Aravallis via the marble Jain temple at Ranakpur to Jodhpur, the Blue City, where Mehrangarh Fort towers above the old town. The trip ends deep in the Thar Desert at Jaisalmer, where people still live inside a golden sandstone fort, the havelis are carved like lace and evenings are spent on camelback across the Sam dunes before a folk music performance and dinner at a desert camp.

Rajasthan suits families, couples, photographers and anyone who loves history. Distances are long, so we plan the loop over seven or eight nights with comfortable drives, heritage-style hotels and a local guide in each city. Travel between October and March, when days are warm and nights cool; summer is fiercely hot. Along the way there is excellent shopping for block prints, bandhani, blue pottery and silver jewellery, and some of the richest vegetarian food in India.

See the Pink City's famous façade, the royal City Palace museum and the UNESCO-listed Jantar Mantar observatory, all within walking distance.

03

Lake Pichola, Udaipur

Take a sunset boat ride past the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir, then walk through the City Palace overlooking the water.

Ride a camel or jeep over the dunes at sunset, then enjoy folk music, Kalbeliya dance and dinner under the desert sky.

When to go

Best time

Winter

October to March

Warm days and cool nights, perfect for forts and desert camps; desert nights can drop close to freezing in December and January.

Summer

April to June

Very hot, with Jaisalmer touching 45°C; desert camps largely close. Visit only if you plan sightseeing for early mornings.

Monsoon

July to September

Light rain brings Udaipur's lakes and the Aravallis to life; humid but less crowded, with good hotel offers.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Direct flights from Hyderabad to Jaipur take about 2 hours. For the full loop, fly into Jaipur and out of Jodhpur or Udaipur (both with Hyderabad connections, often via Delhi or Mumbai) to avoid driving back from Jaisalmer.

By train

A few direct trains connect Hyderabad and Secunderabad with Jaipur, taking roughly 30–36 hours. Within Rajasthan, overnight trains link Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.

By road

On our loop, distances between cities run from about 250 to 400 km, or 5–7 hours by car, with stops at Chittorgarh and Ranakpur to break the journey.

Insider tips

  • Buy the Jaipur composite ticket if you plan to see several monuments; it covers Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and more.
  • Start fort visits early in the morning; even in winter, the midday sun on stone ramparts is strong.
  • Ranakpur's Jain temple requires modest dress and does not allow leather items inside; check visiting hours for non-Jain visitors.
  • Bargain politely in bazaars and buy gems and textiles only from shops with clear receipts.
  • Pack a warm jacket for the desert camp in winter; nights in the Thar can be surprisingly cold.

Pack these

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light layers — mornings are chilly from December to February
  • Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen
  • Scarf for mosques and temples
  • Original photo ID for monument tickets
  • Small bag only — large bags are not allowed inside the Taj
  • Light cottons for the day and a warm layer for desert nights
  • Comfortable walking shoes for fort ramps
