About Haridwar

Haridwar, where the Ganga leaves the mountains for the plains, is the traditional starting point of the Char Dham Yatra, the pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath high in the Garhwal Himalaya. Before the journey begins, pilgrims take a dip at Har Ki Pauri and sit for the evening Ganga aarti, when hundreds of diyas float down the river. It is a moving way to begin a yatra that many families plan for years.

Our twelve-day yatra follows the traditional clockwise order and never rushes it. From Haridwar you drive to Barkot for the trek or pony ride to Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna, then to Uttarkashi for darshan at Gangotri, where the Bhagirathi flows past the temple. From Guptkashi you travel to Gaurikund and climb the 16 to 18 km trail to Kedarnath, staying overnight near the temple so you can join the evening aarti and an early morning darshan. The final stop is Badrinath on the banks of the Alaknanda, with a visit to Mana, the last village before the Tibet border, before returning to Haridwar via Rishikesh.

The yatra is physically demanding, with long mountain drives, altitudes above 3,500 metres and cold nights even in summer, but careful pacing makes it achievable for most healthy pilgrims, including seniors. Registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory, and we handle it along with hotels close to each shrine, pure-vegetarian meals and experienced hill drivers. Helicopter tickets for Kedarnath can be arranged on request, subject to official availability.

Walk or ride about 6 km from Janki Chatti to the shrine of Goddess Yamuna, and see rice cooked in the hot spring at Surya Kund.

When to go

Best time

Opening season

May to June

Temples have just opened; pleasant days and clear mountain views, but this is the peak rush, so register and book early.

Monsoon

July to August

Heavy rain, landslides and road closures make travel risky; many pilgrims avoid this period, and the yatra may be paused during alerts.

Autumn

Mid-September to October

Clear skies and thinner crowds after the rains, with cold nights; temples close for winter around Diwali and Bhai Dooj.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Direct flights from Hyderabad to Dehradun (DED) take about 2 hours 30 minutes; Haridwar is about an hour's drive from the airport. Alternatively, fly to Delhi and continue by road or train.

By train

Take a train from Hyderabad or Secunderabad to Delhi (22–28 hours), then the Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi to Haridwar in about 4–5 hours.

By road

Delhi to Haridwar is about 220 km, roughly 5 hours by car. From Haridwar, the yatra itself is by road in hill vehicles, with treks or ponies at Yamunotri and Kedarnath.

Insider tips

  • Register for the Char Dham Yatra on the official Uttarakhand Tourism portal before you travel and carry the registration, with ID, on your phone and in print; check current rules every season.
  • Get a medical check-up before the yatra, especially if you are over 55 or have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions; the shrines are at 3,000–3,600 metres.
  • Book Kedarnath helicopter tickets only through the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal; many fake websites target pilgrims.
  • Carry warm layers, a rain jacket, sturdy shoes and personal medicines; weather changes fast, and nights at Kedarnath are freezing.
  • Walk slowly on the Kedarnath and Yamunotri treks, drink water regularly and start early; ponies and palkis are available at fixed official rates.

Pack these

  • Warm layers, thermal innerwear and a down jacket — it's cold at the dhams even in May
  • Waterproof poncho or raincoat
  • Trekking shoes with good grip and a walking stick
  • Personal medicines, ORS and Diamox (on medical advice)
  • Original Aadhaar and yatra registration QR
  • Power bank and torch — power cuts are common
  • Small backpack for the Kedarnath overnight; leave big luggage in the car
  • Warm jacket, thermals, woollen cap and gloves
