Greece
Athens, Mykonos and Santorini sunsets
About Greece
Greece combines some of the most important ancient sites in the world with island scenery that looks like a postcard. Most trips begin in Athens, where the Acropolis and the Parthenon rise above the city. The Acropolis Museum displays the original sculptures, and the old Plaka district below is full of tavernas, small shops and lanes that light up in the evening.
From Athens, high-speed ferries cross the Aegean to the Cyclades. Mykonos is known for its windmills, the colourful waterfront of Little Venice, golden beaches and a lively evening scene. Santorini, shaped by an ancient volcanic eruption, has whitewashed villages clinging to the caldera cliffs and blue-domed churches above the sea. Staying in a caldera-view room, watching the famous sunset from Oia and taking a catamaran cruise to the volcanic hot springs are the classic Santorini moments, and the reason it is so loved by honeymooners.
For Indian travellers, Greece uses the Schengen visa, so the trip can be combined with Italy or other European countries. Ferries between the islands are frequent in the main season but need to be booked in advance for July and August. Late May, June and September bring warm sea, sunshine and fewer crowds than the peak of summer, and many island hotels close between November and March. Combining a couple of nights in Athens with three or more on the islands gives the best balance of history and relaxation, and leaves time for slow breakfasts overlooking the sea. Families with older children enjoy the beaches and boat trips as much as couples do.
