About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is the classic Himalayan hill station: tea gardens spilling down steep slopes, a little steam train winding through the bazaar and, on a clear morning, the snow-covered Kanchenjunga massif glowing pink at sunrise. Founded as a summer retreat in the British era, it still has its Mall Road, old bakeries and Gothic churches, along with Tibetan monasteries and a strong Gorkha and Lepcha culture.

Our five-night package pairs the hills with Kolkata. In Darjeeling you rise early for the Tiger Hill sunrise over Kanchenjunga, stop at the Ghoom Monastery and the Batasia Loop war memorial, ride the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train, and visit Happy Valley Tea Estate to see how the famous first and second flush teas are made. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Padmaja Naidu Zoo, home to red pandas and snow leopards, are a short walk apart. A day trip takes you to Mirik, a lake town surrounded by orange orchards and tea gardens.

The trip then drops to the plains for Kolkata, India's former capital and its cultural heart. Here you see the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the Hooghly and the old colonial streets of the city centre, and eat your way through some of India's best street food and sweets. It is a gentle trip that suits families, seniors and couples alike. Travellers from Hyderabad fly into Bagdogra for the hills and out of Kolkata at the end, so there is no backtracking. Pack warm layers for Darjeeling and light cotton for Kolkata, and leave room in your bag for tea and sweets.

Toy train joy ride

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's joy ride runs from Darjeeling to Ghum and back, looping around the Batasia gardens with Kanchenjunga as the backdrop.

05

Victoria Memorial and Howrah Bridge

Kolkata's white marble memorial and museum, and the great cantilever bridge over the Hooghly, are the city's defining landmarks.

When to go

Best time

Autumn and early winter

October to December

Crisp, clear skies and the best mountain views of the year. Pleasant weather in Kolkata too, with Durga Puja in October.

Spring

March to May

Mild days, rhododendrons and the first flush tea season, though haze can hide the peaks some mornings.

Monsoon and deep winter

June to September; January to February

Monsoon brings heavy rain and occasional landslides; January and February are cold, often near freezing, but views can be superb.

Getting there from Hyderabad

By flight

Fly Hyderabad to Bagdogra (direct or one-stop, about 2.5–5 hours), then drive about 3 hours up to Darjeeling. Kolkata has many direct flights back to Hyderabad, about 2 hours.

By train

Trains from Secunderabad reach Kolkata (Howrah) in about 26–30 hours; from Kolkata, overnight trains run to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 3 hours by road from Darjeeling.

By road

Between Darjeeling and Kolkata, the usual route is a drive down to Bagdogra or NJP followed by a 1-hour flight or an overnight train.

Insider tips

  • Book toy train joy ride tickets in advance on the IRCTC website, as seats sell out in peak season.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer; mornings at Tiger Hill are cold in every season.
  • Mountain views are clearest early in the morning, so plan sightseeing to start early.
  • Traffic between Siliguri and Darjeeling can be slow, so allow extra time before flights from Bagdogra.
  • In Kolkata, use app cabs or the Metro to get around; the city is very congested during festival season.

Pack these

  • Warm jacket for Tiger Hill (it's near 0°C at dawn in winter)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Umbrella
  • Light cottons for Kolkata
  • Original photo ID
  • Small torch for the early Tiger Hill start
