About Australia

Australia is big, bold and endlessly outdoorsy, and a ten-day trip along the east coast gives you its best-known sights. Sydney is the starting point, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, a harbour dinner cruise, the beach at Bondi and the coastal walk to Coogee. A day trip to the Blue Mountains takes you to the Three Sisters rock formation, the Scenic World railway and eucalyptus forests that give the range its blue haze.

From Sydney you fly north to the Gold Coast, a strip of surf beaches and high-rise towns that is home to Australia's biggest theme parks. Families love Movie World, Sea World and Dreamworld, and wildlife parks such as Currumbin let you hand-feed kangaroos and see koalas up close. The final stop is tropical Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. A full-day cruise to the outer reef lets you snorkel or dive among coral and tropical fish, or see it from a semi-submersible. The Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail cableway take you through ancient World Heritage rainforest.

Indian travellers will find Australia welcoming, with a large Indian community and Indian restaurants in every city. A visitor visa is required and applied for online. Distances are large, so internal flights are essential. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) bring comfortable weather across both New South Wales and Queensland. Domestic flights, park passes and the reef cruise are best booked together so the itinerary flows smoothly from city to coast to rainforest.

Insider tips

  • Apply for your Australian visitor visa online well in advance and keep proof of funds and bookings ready.
  • Declare all food items on arrival; Australia has strict biosecurity rules and heavy fines.
  • Use high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses; the Australian sun is very strong.
  • Swim only between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches.
  • Australia uses Type I plugs, so carry an adapter.

Pack these

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest
  • Swimwear and quick-dry towel
  • Hat and sunglasses — the UV index is very high
  • Light jacket for Blue Mountains evenings
  • Australian plug adapter (Type I)
  • Motion-sickness tablets for the reef cruise
  • Comfortable trainers for theme parks
