About this Koyasan, Nara & Kyoto trip
Discover the spiritual heart of Japan, where Buddhism arrived from India via China and Korea. Ride the Nankai railway and cable car up to Koyasan, the mountain monastery founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) in 816, and spend a night in a temple lodging (shukubo): vegetarian shojin ryori dinner, the dawn sutra chanting and the fire ritual, and a lantern-lit walk through Okunoin, where some 200,000 graves line a cedar forest path to Kobo Daishi's mausoleum. In Nara, Japan's first capital, stand before the Great Buddha of Todai-ji and stroll among the sacred deer to Kasuga Taisha. End with four nights in Kyoto at Kiyomizu-dera, the 1,001 Kannon of Sanjusangen-do, the gates of Fushimi Inari, the Golden Pavilion and the Zen garden of Ryoan-ji.
A night in a Koyasan temple, Nara's Great Buddha and Kyoto's sacred temples and shrines.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Japan?
Yes. Indian passport holders resident in India can apply for a single-entry tourist visa, including Japan's eVisa through the official VFS process. Processing usually takes about a week; we provide the itinerary, hotel bookings and a covering letter.
What is a shukubo temple stay like?
You sleep on futons in a traditional tatami room in a working temple, with shared or private bathrooms depending on the room. Dinner and breakfast are shojin ryori — Buddhist vegetarian cuisine — and guests may join the dawn prayers and fire ritual.
Is the food suitable for vegetarians and Jains?
Shojin ryori is fully plant-based and traditionally avoids onion and garlic. Elsewhere in Japan vegetarian food takes planning because dashi (fish stock) is common, so we pre-book vegetarian dinners and share a list of Indian and vegetarian restaurants.
Is this trip good for seniors?
Yes, with a moderate amount of walking. Trains are punctual and comfortable, luggage is forwarded so you carry only a small bag, and taxis can replace walks when needed.
Is there an Indian connection to these temples?
Japanese Buddhism traces its roots to India: Sanskrit siddham script is used in Koyasan's rituals, and deities like Benzaiten (Saraswati) and Bishamonten (Vaishravana) are worshipped. Todai-ji's consecration in 752 was led by the Indian monk Bodhisena.
